Some places feel untouched by time, and Raja Ampat is one of them. A vast archipelago of limestone karsts, lush jungle-covered islets, and impossibly clear waters, it is a sanctuary for marine life and those who seek adventure beneath the waves. For ten days, the Emperor Harmoni was our home—an elegant, traditionally crafted phinisi built for exploration, where life moved to the rhythm of the ocean.
Each morning, the divers slipped into the warm waters of the Coral Triangle, greeted by reef sharks, schools of barracuda, swirling jackfish, and kaleidoscopic coral gardens. While they descended into the depths, I found my own adventure above—watching the world unfold from the deck, drone in hand, capturing the vastness of Raja Ampat from the air.
An Underwater Wonderland
Diving in Raja Ampat is a masterclass in marine biodiversity, where every descent feels like stepping into a David Attenborough documentary. Some sites were drift dives, where the current swept divers past forests of giant gorgonian fans, while others revealed hidden pinnacles teeming with life.
There were moments that stole the breath—manta rays gliding effortlessly over cleaning stations, their enormous wingspans casting shadows over the reef. They appeared again and again, at sites like Eagle Rock and Shadow Reef, sometimes alone, sometimes in graceful formations of three or four, dancing in the current.
At Melissa’s Garden, a coral plateau erupted in color, with thousands of anthias flickering like fireflies in the shallows. In deeper waters, blacktip and whitetip reef sharks patrolled the slopes, while wobbegong sharks lay camouflaged against the sand, undisturbed by the passing divers. Four Kings and Citrus Ridge were swarming with activity—massive bait balls twisting and shifting as hungry trevallies and tunas darted through, hunting with precision.
And then, there were the surprises—a sudden encounter with a school of bumphead parrotfish, their beaked mouths crunching noisily through coral, or the mesmerizing glow of an electric clam hidden within the reef.
A Bird’s-Eye View of Paradise
While the divers explored Raja Ampat’s world beneath the waves, I found myself equally captivated by the view from above. The Emperor Harmoni cut a striking silhouette against the turquoise waters, sailing past hidden beaches, dramatic limestone cliffs, and impossibly blue lagoons.
From the air, I could follow the dinghies weaving through coral atolls, their paths traced by the shimmering wakes of dolphins racing alongside. I watched as sea turtles drifted lazily below the surface, their shadows casting moving patterns on the reef, and on some lucky mornings, false killer whales surfaced in the distance, their sleek bodies breaking the glassy water.
There’s something about watching an untouched world from above—the realization that places like this still exist, remote and wild, waiting to be explored.
Life Onboard the Emperor Harmoni
A journey like this is only as good as the vessel that carries you, and the Emperor Harmoni was nothing short of exceptional. A custom-built, 42-meter phinisi, she was designed for adventure but delivered it with five-star comfort.

With a crew of 21, the service onboard was seamless—from dive masters ensuring perfect underwater experiences to chefs crafting gourmet meals daily. Our top-deck corner cabin was a retreat in itself, with expansive windows offering panoramic ocean views. Waking up to the sight of mist rising over jungle-covered islands, with nothing but the sound of gentle waves, was an experience in itself.
Dining at Sea
Meals were a highlight of each day, a fusion of Indonesian flavors and international favorites, always fresh and beautifully presented. Breakfasts were light and tropical, perfect before a dive, while lunches and dinners were feasts—grilled seafood, rich curries, freshly baked bread, and decadent desserts. Between dives, there were endless snacks and fresh juices, ensuring no one ever went hungry.
Evenings were best spent on the upper deck, watching the sunset paint the sky in deep oranges and soft purples before fading into a night sky overflowing with stars.
The Magic of Raja Ampat
It’s hard to leave a place like this and not feel changed. Raja Ampat isn’t just a destination—it’s a reminder of how wild and beautiful the world can be. For divers, it’s the ultimate underwater playground, where every descent promises the unexpected. For those who simply wish to take it all in, the landscapes alone tell a story.
For ten days, the Emperor Harmoni carried us through one of the last true paradises, where the ocean still reigns, the reefs still thrive, and adventure awaits in every tide.
