We arrived a little after four on a grey Tuesday, tired from the drive and ready to be looked after. Before we had found the front step, someone had opened the door, taken our bags and said our name. It was the kind of welcome that makes you stand up a little straighter.
The fire was lit in the great room, and the person at the desk noticed our wet sleeves and offered tea before she offered a key. Our room faced the water. Someone had left the window open a few centimetres so the room smelled of cedar, and a handwritten card on the desk mentioned the walk we had asked about when we booked.
What follows is an honest account of the next two days, in the order they happened. Most of it is a pleasure to write. A few moments are worth a second look, and we have tried to describe them the way a guest would feel them, with a thought about what might help.

Five dots is a moment a guest would tell friends about. Three is fine, and forgettable.
On the second morning the mist had lifted from the water and we took our coffee to the dock. A member of the grounds team stopped to point out the loons near the far shore, and asked whether we would like a blanket brought down. These are the moments that do not appear on any list, and they are the ones guests carry home.
Dinner that evening began beautifully. The server remembered that we had mentioned the walk, and asked how it had gone before she asked about wine. The kitchen sent a small plate of something from the garden, which we have described more fully below.
The spa was quiet and calm, with one small thing worth mentioning about the way bookings were confirmed.
