Overview
The Lagoon in February
Every winter the grey whales come down the Pacific coast to the sheltered lagoons of Baja to calve. In Magdalena Bay a mother will sometimes bring her calf right up to the side of a small boat, and nobody on board forgets it.
Every journey here is a starting point, not a product. We move the dates, swap a camp, add a night where you will want one, take out the walk your knee will not enjoy, and price it for the people actually travelling.

How the eight nights run
A starting point, not a set tour. We change the nights, the order and the hotels to suit you.
Nights 1 to 4A luxury resort on the Los Cabos corridor
Fly into San Jose del Cabo and settle in somewhere quiet between the two towns. Desert mornings, the Sea of Cortez in front of you, and humpbacks offshore in the same months. Nothing is scheduled.
San Jose del Cabo · the Los Cabos corridor
Day 5North to the Pacific side
A private driver up the peninsula, most of a day through desert and past La Paz, or a short charter flight if you would rather not. You arrive at the lagoon for the evening.
La Paz · Ciudad Constitucion
Nights 5 to 7Magdalena Bay and the whales
Two or three mornings on the lagoon in a private panga with a licensed local guide. The whales set the pace; some days a mother and calf stay close for a long time. Optional: two nights in a simple glamping camp on the barrier island, with the whales breathing in the dark.
Puerto San Carlos or Lopez Mateos · Isla Magdalena, optional
Night 8La Paz, then home
A last night in La Paz on the way back south, with an evening on the malecon, then a flight home from La Paz or San Jose del Cabo.

Questions
Before you choose this journey
When is the whale season in Magdalena Bay?
The grey whales are in the lagoons from about mid January to late March, with February the busiest month for mothers and calves. We plan this trip for February and early March.
Will the whales really come close to the boat?
Often, but never on demand. The boats are small, the guides are local and the rules are strict: boats keep their distance and let the whales decide. Some mornings are quiet. That is why we plan two or three mornings on the water, not one.
Is the island camp comfortable?
Comfortable, not luxurious. Proper beds in canvas tents, simple shared facilities and good food, on a sand island with no other buildings. It is optional; the alternative is a small hotel in town and a short boat ride out each morning.
